Question
I am taking Methotrexate for RA. I read that there is a small risk of it causing cancer. Can you tell me what type of cancer it might cause. I have relatives on both sides of my family with cancer. Could this increase the risk of me getting cancer from MTX?
Answer
There are a few reported cases of lymphoma cancers that occurred with MTX and resolved when MTX was stopped. These appear to be very rare and isolated occurances. Many studies have shown that MTX, in the doses given for RA does not increase the risk of cancer.
