Question
I have AS and Enbrel worked brilliantly for one year. It has suddenly stopped being effective. Prior to being on Enbrel I was on Remicade, that too, after a year or two started to become less effective and I also developed an allergic reaction to the infusion. Would it be worth trying Humira, or is it exactly the same thing as Enbrel?
Answer
Remicade, Enbrel and Humira are all inhibitors of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) which causes inflammation. See our section on RA treatments. Remicade and Humira are monoclonal antibodies against TNF. Remicade has a portion of a mouse protein, Humira is fully human. Enbrel is a soluble receptor that binds TNF. Thus all are different and Humira is worth the try.
