Question
My father was diagnosed with RA many years ago and is now having terrible lower back pain. His pain has reduced him to using a cane when walking, however he remains active by using a four wheeler. His physician just prescribed Lyrica for his pain and told him to stay off the four wheeler. My father was diagnosed with high blood sugar 2yrs ago and does take a pill for it. I can not find any information with treating RA patients with Lyrica. Do you know of any benefits?
Answer
RA does not affect the spine and thus your father’s back pain is likely due to degenerative issues– degenerative disk disease, osteoarthritis. Lyrica is used to treat a variety of painful conditions and is approved to treat pain due to neuropathies. It is not used to specifically treat arthritis.
