Question
My husband has RA and we are considering purchasing a hot tub for him and have found there are many types – so-called therapy tubs are considerably higher priced. Would the main benefit come from the heated water or is there a benefit derived from the water massage? He has had considerable pain, is being treated by a doctor, but my thought was the hot tub could give him some relief and possibly he could do some water excersize as well. We are completely willing to spend the extra money for the therapy tub if it is indeed beneficial. But then, if this is just sales hype, don’t want to be taken by the desire to do whatever to make him more comfortable.
Answer
It is always the basic, practical questions to which there are never any good answers. I have never seen a study looking at this in any scientific way. If I had to guess, I would think the hot water together with enough room to move the joints would be of most benefit. But then again, a water massage sounds pretty good about now.
