Question
I recently went to see my Primary MD because of severe arm pain the affected both sides. My RA factor came back @ 25 the lab report read high! Can you translate this for me. I do have an appointment with a Rhuematologist.
Answer
Rheumatoid factor (RF) is a test used to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA). About 80% of patients with RA will have a positive RF test. However as many as 10-15% of the normal population (No RA) will also have a positive RF test. The higher the test value, the more likely the test will indicate RA. Yours is only slightly high. The diagnosis of RA can only made with the appropriate signs and symptoms, specifically the finding of joint swelling on examination. Look on this site for a discussion on RA.
