Question
Hi, I’m 24, and have been on remicade for over a year now for Ulcerative Colitis. I’d like to know if it is safe to take remicade during your pregnancy. Can you help?
Answer
Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information. The largest case series is with patients taking Remicade for Crohn’s Disease. The records of approximately 90 patients who recieved Remicade during pregnancy were analyzed. No increase in miscarriages or congential defects were noted above that expected in ther general population. There has also been a small report published of 10 patients treated with Remicade who did not suffer any significant problems.
However promising, these reports are too small to definitively exclude the possibility of fetal problems with Remicade. This is a difficult decision that you need to discuss fully with your doctors. You need to weigh the risk of a UC flare with the possible risk of the drug.
